How many times have you found yourself packing up all those gifts for the family in unattractive garbage bags, just because they fit. Why not trade in the garbage bags for a more eco friendly alternative: reusable shopping bags.

The problem with using garbage and generic single use plastic bags is that they rip. Box have edges and edges poke through creating a Christmas nightmare. You know like this one:

“Our horror came when we went to mom’s house on Christmas Eve. She had exchanged all the butter and sugar in the cookies and pastries for Splenda and margarine. It had horrible texture besides tasting bad. She wanted us to be more healthy she said, but the greatest shock was to come. She decided that she didn’t want a mess in her kitchen so she served pre-made frozen lasagna as the main. It was a disaster of decorum and taste. Mom has not been aloud to host a get together since. We still give her a good ribbing every year.”

Oh, the horror…not lasagna.

Pretty soon presents are sitting on the floorboard of your car, falling into the yard and all because you decided not to go green and get a reusable bag. You won’t break custom reusable bags because they are made of a tough material that can keep up with even the most bothersome present and oddly shaped package. You can save the time spent picking up presents to practice the “fruitcake face.”

“Definition.…fruitcake face….The surprised look on your face after opening a gift of something truly awful or unwanted (like that fruitcake that has been passed around amongst your family and friends for decades). Masters of the fruitcake face have learned to change a look of horror into a look of surprise in less time than it takes one to blink their eyes. It takes years of practice to master a presentable fruitcake face……one that doesn’t cause hurt feeling, streams of profanity being blurted out, or broken relationships.”

Why not try one of our Go Green 10 packs and sort everyone’s presents into different bags. No fuss, no muss and definitely no garbage bags. You may not think grocery bags appropriate for Christmas time, but what’s a better alternative.

You are not only saving the environment because what do you do with all those single use plastic bags and trash bags when Christmas if over. They go straight into the landfill.

“Combinations of efforts are used to capture wayward plastic bags including a ‘battle fence’ and laborers with easy reach pickers. The Bowerman landfill had an expense of $83,000 for a moveable wind cage in 2007 and there were approximately 344 labor hours per week for plastic bag cleanup between the three landfills. Overall, the costs in 2007 were $237,856 according to the report.”

Don’t let Christmas become a environmental problem and pack your presents with green shopping bags.

He’s making a list and checking it twice before scooting down that chimney and delivering millions of toys to boys and girls everywhere. Santa Claus was one of the first user of reusable shopping bags. What? Do you think that massive sack carrying the toys of all the world’s children is made out of paper or plastic? He was the original person to go green.

Santa spends most of his days working in the shop and having lazy days … apparently watching soccer.

“It was a perfect pre-Christmas Saturday for me. Mrs Claus and I slept in until about 9a… which is late for me. And this will be one of the last Saturday’s I can sleep in. We didn’t get out of our PJs until shortly after noon. I brewed the first pot of Starbucks Thanksgiving blend coffee to start the day and then settled in to watch football (the global version). I flipped between various English Premier League games. My favorite team, Manchester United, won with a goal by Park in the 94th minute… what an exciting game.”

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed to…soccer…really? Anyway, reusable bags have been around for centuries and were in fact used prior to other shopping bags. Santa’s cloth bag has been used and reused since ole Saint Nick started delivering toys to all the boys and girls.

When NORAD checks the skies for Santa Claus, do you really think they are picking up on that tiny little sleigh? No, they are honing in on that giant shopping bag he’s got in the back. The sack has to be at least three times the size of that sleigh and that is you account for any magical sizing. You really should check out the NORAD website to find out exactly where Claus and his custom reusable bag is in the world.

“Like most traditions, this one has evolved over time. Now, in addition to racing downstairs to their stockings, children can follow Santa online on his annual trip from the North Pole to their chimney. With NORAD Tracks Santa, children and families can watch Santa as he delivers presents all over the globe (with a little help from the North American Aerospace Defense Command). If you haven’t yet followed this tradition in your family, we’d like to invite you to join us this Christmas Eve.

Why not take a cue from Santa Claus this year and use a green bag for your shopping. Choose one of your Going Green 10-packs to help lug around presents. He may jiggle like a bowl full of jelly, but the jolly fat man has been doing this for centuries, so I assume he knows what he’s doing. Grocery bags can be reusable or not and the decision is yours. I can guarantee that you’ll be on the nice list. Christmas is about giving and goodness and nothing can be better than helping out Mother Nature.

Don’t worry if you haven’t been using green shopping bags, even Santa Claus makes the occasional mistake.

“I had been so distracted with my cookies that I had forgotten the meatloaf until Clumsy the Elf came rushing in. “Something is burning! Something is burning!” I looked around and sure enough, Clumsy was right! He had seen smoke coming from my window and had rushed in to see what was happening.”

There are many things to be thankful for on Thanksgiving and anyone that has had to hail a 30 pound turkey knows that a reusable shopping bag is one of them. Why would a green shopping bag be such a God send on Thanksgiving?

They won’t break under the weight of that giant bird like those one-time-use plastic bags do. Lets face it, we all have had those Thanksgiving horror stories where the turkey got burnt or Uncle Fred stunk up the house with turkey gas.

“I drove my mother to our friends’ house for Thanksgiving dinner and nabbed a parking space right in front of their house. Mom handed to me the pan with the turkey, gravy and stuffing, which I placed atop our Volkswagen Beetle while I helped her out. But, when I slammed her door, the vibration caused the pan to slide along the roof, gathering speed down the slope of the back window and over the curved back fender to fly off the car, onto the snow. While my Mom looked on aghast, I quickly replaced the turkey and stuffing from the snow into the pan, brushing off odd bits of gravel. I took Mom’s arm and we turned to walk into the house only to see the front window packed with the horrified faces of our friends, who had apparently watched the whole incident.”

A frozen turkey catapulted from a broken grocery bag, especially on a down hill grade, can gain a lot of momentum down an icy road. I know we all want to go green, but this isn’t what they meant by free range chicken.

You’re going to need a pretty big custom printed bag that says Happy Thanksgiving from the Smiths-Woznyowski’s if you want to haul off one of those turkeys. The good news is a reusable grocery bag can be used to carry almost anything from that pan of stuffing to the fruit cake that no one’s going to eat. The good news is cloth shopping bags are perfect for leftovers. You can even make your own.

“What’s better than an ordinary reusable bag? One you’ve made yourself from an on-its-last-legs T-shirt. All you’ll need is an old tee, scissors, a needle and thread, and about an hour to get crafty.”

But why would you need to make one when there are so many available at a great low price. Check out the Going Green 10-pack, and get some for your friends as well.

When it comes down to it, Thanksgiving is all about family. It’s about the camaraderie and belonging. A wholesale reusable bag may not bring your family closer together, but it can help make things easier for the big day.

“Thanksgiving is a holiday that should be celebrated each and every day from the time we wake up until the time we go to bed. The national Thanksgiving holiday is a day when we come together with loved ones and friends to publicly recognize this most important expression of giving: Thanks.

While your 8-year-old may not be thrilled with a stack of reusable bags for Christmas…kids these days… that doesn’t mean they don’ t deserve some attention this holiday season. There are many ways a reusable bag can fit into your holiday plans.

Keep Your Presents Secret

When you go shopping at major stores, they most likely use plastic bags imprinted with their names on them. If you’re trying to hide a gift that has to be purchased at a specific store, the bag is going to be a dead giveaway of what’s inside. It’s one thing to have a major box store bag, but when you’re trying to be stealthy with a gift from a specialty store, the chances of successfully keeping the secret take a nose dive if it’s in one of their throw away store bags. You might as well just shout out what you bought as soon as you walk through the door. Reusable shopping bags are the perfect alternative.

“I do most of my shopping online as I find that to be more pleasurable than going out shopping, but a few things had to be purchased from the mall and elsewhere. When I mentioned to the cashiers that I had brought my own bags, they were often surprised and had to be reminded again as they tried to put my purchases in a regular bag. The great thing about using reusable bags at Christmas is that you can come home with all your bags and your family has no idea which stores you have been to.

Environmental Christmas Wrap

There’s nothing more wasteful than the rolls and rolls of paper that are wasted every year on Christmas presents. All they do is end up littering the landfills with all those one time use plastic bags. Why not go green this year, and put your gifts in a environmentally friendly shopping bags?

“Make the wrapping of the gift part of the gift, something that can be used for another purpose afterward, like a scarf, reusable bag or even a tablecloth.”

This is perfect for a business with many employees. If you like to give gifts away each holiday season, wrap them in a custom printed bag with your bag logo. It’s a great gift for them and an easy and inexpensive way for advertising.

“Wrapping a Gift in something that can be reused again is like giving two gifts for the price of one. Who knows long term, the Reusable Bag you wrap you present in, might get more use that the gift itself. “

If you are looking for some great gift bags, try out one of our Go Green 10 packs. You’ll be able to get one for everyone on your Christmas list and not have to spend a fortune. It doesn’t matter if it’s for business, relatives or the old Scrooge next door, you can’t go wrong with eco friendly bags.

Let’s face it, we all love putting up those creepy decorations for Halloween, but no one wants to spend the hours it takes to pack them all back up again. Why not make your decoration hassle a little easier by using reusable bags instead of boxes? You don’t want to leave your decorations up and be…that guy.

“It’s now several weeks past Halloween, and yet all of my Halloween home decor is still proudly displayed in our dining room, and it doesn’t look like anyone is going to be taking them down anytime soon. Our Halloween home decor consists primarily of my Department 56 Haunted Village, complete with miniature buildings, such as the Black Widow Dating service, light-up skeletons sitting on park benches and a scary pumpkin patch. Granted, it isn’t as large as my colossal Christmas village that takes up several tables and has multiple levels, but the Halloween village is a growing work in progress. But, as much as I like looking at it, it would be really great if someone would come pack it all up for me so I don’t have to.”

We all want to go green, so why not ditch those mismatched cardboard boxes with flexible and easy to carry green bags that take the hassle out of taking down decorations? Odds are you’ve got a lot of extra grocery bags sitting around with no real use. Why not use these bags for what they were made for…holding things.

Put those window clings into one bag, those black candles in another and don’t forget to wrap that Halloween village in paper before putting them into shopping bags. There is a wrong way and right way to take down Halloween decorations.

“You spent the whole night running from one house to the other with your children, or sitting on your porch handing out bags of candy. But now that the big day is over, it’s time to take down the inflatable spider and orange lights. It may seem like old hat, but there is a “right and wrong” way to take down decorations. You’ll want to do it correctly, so that next year you’re not pulling your hair out.”

I don’t have that much hair left to pull out, so it looks like I am buying a few bundles of these Go Green 10-packs. Don’t even think about trying this with those single use plastic bags. They won’t make it up the stairs before that pointy witch’s’ hat is poking through and pretty soon your stairwell is filled with broken Halloween lights and witchy body parts.

Reusable shopping bags are tough and made for carrying things that have points and rough edges. That skull’s head may be smooth, but that bony hand isn’t going in one of those plastic or even paper bags. It’s time to grab those green shopping bags and brave the weather, because no one else is going to do it.

“Today as I drove around the neighborhood (putting off writing yet another revision for my editor of a “grabber” beginning for my book), I noticed numerous pumpkins with barely recognizable faces, long overdue for the yard recycle or wherever dead pumpkins go after the holidays. Strings of orange Halloween twinkle lights festooned some trees and even some Jack o’ Lantern pumpkin lights still dangled on a charming white fence. “

Before I started using reusable grocery bags, at least two or three times a month, my groceries would end up littering my front yard. Those plastic one-time use bags just didn’t cut the mustard. The grocery bags would fall apart with the slightest sharp edge, and don’t even try carrying milk in a paper bag.

Wholesale reusable bags are just sturdier than their plastic and paper counterparts. You can carry a watermelon, or pumpkin – given the time of year, and never have to worry about them falling apart or stretching. This Halloween, don’t forget that when you’re children are overburdened with candy.

“Plastic Halloween bags can be easily replaced by reusable bags. Encourage trick-or-treaters to carry a reusable tote bag. They are generally much sturdier.”

How many times have you been stabbed by a protruding cereal box corner of impaled on a TV dinner? It’s never drawn blood, but they sure have been close a couple of times. Plastic bags are just a bad idea in general.

“Plastic bags can take up to 1000 years to biodegrade completely, and before that it just breaks down in to smaller and smaller toxic pieces that end up in our food, water, and soil. Plastic bags end up in our landfills and often get tangled and cause permanent damage in waste management machinery. Millions if not billions of other bags end up as urban litter and usually find their way in to rivers, lakes, streams, and the ocean. Animals, especially marine animals, get entangled in plastic bags, and/or ingest them and often suffocate or starve to death.”

No animal is going to suffocate from a reusable grocery bag. If they did, then it’s an example of natural selection at it’s best.

It can even pay to use green bags. Many stores offer special incentives for using reusable bags, so it is not only environmental, but financially savvy to use eco bags.

“Once you have the bags, regardless of how much you paid for them, take the bag credit that many stores offer for using them (which is often a nickel per bag used). Before you know it, those reusable bags will have been paid for through using them and getting the bag credits!”

Don’t forget using bags like the Go Green is a wise decision on many levels. Whether you’re trying to avoid plastic bag contusions or just looking for a way to do your part ecologically, we have the bags for you. Take a step towards plastic bag freedom, and make the world a better place.

For more information about the many types of reusable shopping bags available at Bags on The Run, visit their website, which can provide custom quotes on any order.

When I first started using reusable bags, I didn’t realize exactly how fast they would accumulate. I don’t just shop at one grocery store, and every one I went to had different bags for sale. I also went to fairs and other places that gave them away for free.

Pretty soon my closet was filling with so many green bags and many of them I would never use for groceries. I have three children and the laundry is always going day and night. I could probably do 10 loads a day and still not keep up with it.

One day, as I stared at this mass of reusable shopping bags, I had an idea. I grabbed about 10 of them and put them side by side in the laundry room. I filled one with white socks, another with underwear another with delicates and so on.

It’s important to use reusable produce bags as much as possible. You can even make a contest or challenge out of it like blogger Coupon Newbie, who took part in a reusable bag challenge.

“Luckily, I have not been a failure at ditching the plastic bags. I have been doing a really good job of remembering my reusable bags or skipping the bag altogether when I’m just getting a couple things. I’ve had a few cashiers seem annoyed with me, particularly on larger shopping trips where I am using multiple reusable bags. But overall, it has been a very positive experience”

You can’t do this kind of thing with those single plastic bags, because they will just break, and pretty soon, they wind up in the landfill, on the side of the road or in your lakes and streams. They can clog sewers and be a pain for many years after their single use.

“Every year almost 500 billion to 1 trillion single-use plastic bags are used all over the world. Since these are made up of high density polyethylene plastic (HDPE), they are almost indestructible. It would take about 1,000 years for them to completely disintegrate back to their original chemical ingredients. Since they can’t be destroyed, those that don’t get buried in landfills, end up as litter blowing across landscapes. Many of these bags clog streams and end up in the ocean to create plastic islands that suffocate fish and disrupt the natural food chain.”

I know that simply using bags for storing my dirty laundry rather than piling them all in a hamper may not save the world, but it’s certainly better for me and the environment. Ultimately, it’s the little things that make the most difference over time, so by making eco friendly bags a normal part of my life, I am doing something to help the environment. You can get your 10 laundry bags, like the Go Green, with the click of a button.

They key is to always remember to BYOB – Bring Your Own Bag.

“So the solution brings us back to BYOB, which is incredibly easy. Just remember to use eco friendly reusable shopping bags or wholesale recycled bags, or reuse an old bag, period. Be sure to keep extra reusable bags in the trunk of your car or in your backpack, because you’ll want to make sure they are accessible when you need them. You can also give them to your friends as a reminder to BYOB. Of course, always remember to recycle whenever the opportunity presents itself, recycling is always a victory for the environment. Adopting a BYOB habit in our individual lives and businesses is really the best way to ensure we are truly part of the solution rather than the problem. Now is the time to go out and lead by example.”

It’s that time of year again when the ghosts and goblins come out in full force, but don’t be caught…dead…with some plastic treat bag when you can go green with reusable shopping bags.

Everyone knows that plastic grocery bags just don’t make good treat bags. They rip and the candy starts falling out. Pretty soon, your son or daughter is screaming because their marshmallow treat is all over the ground. It doesn’t help that plastic bags are harmful for the environment and our health.

“Because we all knew that plastic never breaks down entirely, but I don’t think everyone realized that what happens is that plastic fragments and mixes in with your water, your soil, your food, and the food and water of plants and animals, and then it makes its way into our bodies. How is a really troubling and scary story.

Why not celebrate this spooky holiday with reusable bags and not have to worry about falling candy and bags that don’t hold up? Custom bags are sturdy and made of materials that don’t stretch because of Aunt Mabel’s giant popcorn ball. They hold their shape well, so all your candy won’t get squished because the plastic bag droops.

Halloween isn’t a very ecological holiday. Millions of candy wrappers are thrown away and wind up filling our garbage dumps. Parents transport their kids to grandma’s and friends’ houses to show off their costumes, using precious gasoline and releasing carbon monoxide.

Green bags can help alleviate some of this. The same bags you use for picking up groceries and holding your gym clothes, after a good washing, of course, such as the black red 10 pack, can be used to transport costumes as well as candy. There are no plastic bags to throw away.

“Buying one eco friendly reusable bag can remove the need for over 22,000 plastic bags; this is why Green Benefits provides and promotes green programs like reusable bag fundraisers. Other organizations such as The City of Sea-Tac in Washington State, Kellog School of Management in Illinois and Eaton House School in London, England have also decided to use more sustainable practices and make green reusable bags a part of their organization. Green reusable bags are lightweight, easy and convenient to use and washable; they come in all styles, sizes and colors and are customizable with any logo or design.”

You don’t have to use plain, old bags either. There are plenty of custom bags available with spooky ghosts and wicked witches on them. You can purchase them at the store or use a screen printer, just be careful because the bags cannot take excessive heat. Eco friendly bags are the perfect choice for Halloween, and for some places, it’s the only choice. Many towns are enacting a plastic bag ban.

“Santa Monica’s ban on plastic grocery handle bags, officially known as the Single-Use Carryout Bag Ordinance, goes into effect this Thursday, September 1. If you don’t live in Santa Monica, you may not care. But we predict — or at least sure hope — the bag ban will eventually have the same effect as the seat-belt law. As in, remember when New York state passed first mandatory buckle-up law in 1984? If you’re too young to remember how much folks complained about being told it’s a crime not to buckle up, the coroner likely considers that a small nationwide habit-changing victory.”

After going to several stores and events that give out reusable shopping bags, you’re going to get quite a collection. Odds are most of the time you’re going to stick them in the trunk or backseat, so you don’t forget them next time you go shopping.

If you have used the green bags for any length of time, especially for transporting meat or frozen items, they’re going to need to be cleaned. There’s no way around it. You don’t want to be the person in the checkout line with the stinky go green bag.

You want your green bags to be eco friendly and not green because of mold. There is nothing worse than carrying your groceries into the house and noticing that your fresh peaches have been touching that nasty mold that is growing at the bottom of your green shopping bags.

“Obviously, if you are shopping for items like meat or produce, you will want to take some extra precautionary measures to help keep the bags clean. If you have selected an item that is dripping or exposed, you can either use the small plastic bags provided in the meat and produce department or choose one that is not dripping. Having bags dedicated and labeled only for use with things like meat, produce and other items will also help avoid cross-contamination.”

Your shopping bags need to be washed at least once a month to be on the safe side. Who knows that kinds of things those bags have been touching inside your trunk or backseat? This is especially true if you have small children. They could have been doused in ice cream and have month old French fries stuck inside them. When it comes to children, the potential messes are practically endless, just ask Mommy’s Recess.

“You use the bags, empty your groceries and put them away. When you go shopping, you grab them, take them to the car and use them again. But have you ever thought about washing them? I didn’t until I read about how many germs are on those bags, and if you think about it, it’s true. They sit in the cart, they sit in the car, they get wet…yuck. So at least once a month (if not more often).”

Washing wholesale reusable bags is just common sense, especially if you are using them outside of the grocery arena, but remember they should only be washed by hand and air dried. Many people use the bags as multipurpose totes for everything from tools to gym clothes. It’s easy for germs to grow in this environment.

“So there you have it. Go ahead and use reusable bags to tote your groceries. But don’t use the same bags for food that you use to carry your gym clothes or dirty diapers. And, for goodness sake, wash them once in a while, dry them carefully, and don’t continue to use them to carry food after they get dirty and gross.”

It’s also a good idea to replace your bags on a regular basis. You can keep your favorites for a long time, but change out the ones you don’t care too much about. Try out these Go Green favorites. They are inexpensive and perfect for home use.
